Rune guide

Runes are an ancient alphabet used by Germanic and Nordic peoples from the 2nd century onward. Each character (24 in the Elder Futhark) is both a letter and a symbol charged with meaning. Carved in wood, stone or bone, they served both writing and divination. Today, runes are used as a guidance tool: not to predict the future, but to illuminate the present and explore paths of action.

The Elder Futhark: the 24 runes

The Elder Futhark takes its name from its first six runes: Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raido, Kaunan. The 24 runes are divided into three groups of 8 (Aett). Fehu speaks of wealth and abundance. Uruz evokes raw strength and change. Thurisaz is the rune of resistance and productive obstacles. Ansuz symbolizes communication and divine inspiration. Raido indicates a journey or progression. Gebo is the gift and fair exchange. Isa is ice, freezing, a necessary pause. Tiwaz speaks of justice and sacrifice. Berkana is growth and birth.

Making your first rune casting

The single-rune draw is ideal for beginners. Hold your runes in a bag, ask an open question (or simply: 'What energy should I bring to this day?'), then draw one rune. First observe the image or form. Then consult the traditional meaning. Finally, let your intuition make the connection to your situation. A rune may appear upright (direct meaning) or reversed (nuanced, internalized or blocked meaning). For a 3-rune cast: past, present, direction forward.

FAQ

Do you need a specific set of runes to start?

Stone, wooden or crystal runes are the most common and easily found. The key is choosing a set that visually and tactilely appeals to you. Some practitioners make their own runes: this creates a strong personal bond with the tool. A standard Elder Futhark set with a small guide is more than enough to begin.

Are runes linked to a religion?

Runes have roots in Norse mythology (the god Odin is associated with their discovery according to the Eddas). But modern divinatory use is secular, like tarot or chakras, they are used independently of any religious framework. You can work with them in a purely symbolic and psychological approach.

What's the difference between runes and tarot?

Tarot is a complex system of 78 cards with rich iconography and narrative symbolism. Runes are more concise: 24 stripped-down symbols, often more direct in their message. Tarot excels at exploring a situation in depth and with nuance. Runes are ideal for a precise question and a direct answer.
